Looking for a new commercial truck? Well, you'll have an important decision to make: gas or diesel? Both types are great options, each offering its unique blend of benefits to commercial drivers. So, really, it will depend which type of fuel you want your new work truck to run on.
To help New Holland, Lancaster, and Reading, PA, drivers make this decision, our team here at New Holland Isuzu has constructed this diesel vs. gas commercial trucks guide!
Diesel vs Gas: What's the Difference?
The difference between diesel fuel and gasoline starts at the anatomical level.
Gasoline is a mixture of many different hydrogen- and carbon-containing chemicals, or hydrocarbons. Usually, the gas you put in your vehicle will contain around 150 hydrocarbons as well as these BTEX compounds: benzene, ethylbenzene, toluene, and xylene. However, this can vary based on the fuel level you use. For heavy-duty use, you'll likely want to tank up with premium unleaded gas.
Similar to gasoline, diesel is comprised of different hydrocarbons. However, it also contains sulfur, nitrogen, and oxygen. Overall, diesel is much denser than gasoline, which is the key distinction between the two types of fuel.
Benefits of Diesel
Diesel, as stated above, is much thicker than traditional gasoline. That means it will evaporate slower. It also has a higher energy density. These two facts mean diesel will provide a more fuel-efficient driving experience.
Rather than having to stop for fuel frequently as you travel between jobs, your truck will be able to go farther between stops to refuel.
Benefits of Gas
Gas and gasoline engines offer their own unique set of benefits, too. Gas engines tend to be quieter. So, if you prefer a ride that's calm and quiet, helping provide a relaxing reprieve from the jobsite, this could be a better option.
Gasoline is also cheaper when it comes to price per gallon. So, while you'll need to refuel more often, gas will save some money in the price-per-gallon department.
